 T "Silver tsunami" - the real challenge for current dentistry?

  The gradual increase in the proportion of elderly people in the worldwide population is recognized as one of the most important challenges of the twenty-first century. Currently, according to the EUROSTAT data, the share of the elderly (65 or over) among the total population is estimated to be more than 19%. Those aged 65 years or over will account for 29.1 % of the EU-28’s population by the 2080 demographic prognosis. Although aging is an inescapable physiological process, the incidence of functional limitations and chronic illnesses often increase with age. Therefore, the detailed knowledge of various aspects of physiology and pathology of aging is required for achieving a satisfactory quality of physical and mental health in old age.  Oral health as integrated part of general body condition plays a crucial role in overall health and the expected quality of life. The demographic prognosis will have a major impact on the delivery of general and oral-health care, as well as on the providers of these services. Dental professionals should be educated and acquainted with the determinants and expectations of seniors population dental care. The implementation of the preventive and treatment programs, which are adapted to individual needs for the elderly, should be regarded as a key challenge in the near future. During this lecture the effect of immune-aging, reduced adaptive capacity, non-comunicable diseases, on the oral health conditions of the elderly will be presented.

   Demographic studies point out the fact witness of a constant increase of the elderly population. The overall of people over 60 years are expected to double 605 million to 2 billion from 2000 to 2050 (WHO 2013a).
The greatest increase will take place in the developed countries, where the number of the elderly will reach 1.7 billion by the year 2050. Taking into account this phenomenon, several countries are creating adapted policies in order to deal with this challenge.
The reason of this trend is the consequences of several factors:
- The amelioration of the health condition and Health Services.
- The increase of education level.
- The promotion of the better Oral Hygiene.
- Changes in nutrition concerning qality and quantity.
- Social and public health care adapted for elderly, as better housing conditions with enlarge possibilities for handicapped people.
The treatment of the Senior Patient must be specific, because having to cope with peculiar changes of oral conditions for ageing, with consideration to the social and psychological aspects. This creates different demands and needs compared with other cohorts.
In the lecture several clinical based cases will be presented.
